A shortened HT this month as there was limited activity and I have a couple of members who are clearing their hangars, and I am currently on the East Coast enjoying a bit of time away with the family. I am allowed to be at the laptop as it’s been blowing a gale and we had the heaters on last night! Today is sunny and Kerry and the kids are sunning themselves on the beach.
A new Gold Wings recipient
Congratulations to Bob Lockwood who has received his Gold Wings after being tested by Max Wiggins. As a past Gold Wings and Instructor, I am sure this was a breeze for Bob.
Life Members
As mentioned last month, there were a number of members who were awarded life membership. One of those was Kevin Swiggs. Max presented Kevin with his certificate, but unfortunately Kevin is again suffering from ill health and he is back in the John Grove Centre again. Let’s all wish him a speedy recovery.
Flying Strip
We are still waiting for Ron to find time in his busy schedule to lay the second feeder pipe. Until we have that installed, we don’t have the full width coverage of the strip, especially with some of the strong winds we have been having. In the meantime I have been researching automatic irrigation controllers to avoid the need for any manual intervention for watering. We have sourced a solenoid valve with a Rainbird Bluetooth controller. This will go into the single 40mm line that feed the popups. Once Ron installs the second line, we will install the controller etc. We also intend to level the strip as much as possible before laying new seed and Ron says he can do that with his loader bucket. We will do a trial ASAP. A diagram of the parts sourced and the connection sequence, and the completed valve/controller are below.
LMAC-CONTROLLER-PARTS

I had a call from Richard Cooper on February 1, concerned that we might have been overwatering as the strip was underwater and had been for at least a week, as he had made a number of visits to the field, only to find it water logged each visit. Mick had gone down on Wednesday, January 28 and reported the same issue. We both assumed it was due to Ron maybe during the sprinklers on for too long during the day. When I got the call from Richard on Sunday, I thought I better call Ron. Ron hadn’t watered for over 2 weeks! There must be a leak, Ron checked later that day and sure enough, the valve was at 90º to the pipe but the internal valve was not fully shut. Ron shut off the main valve and planned to replace the faulty valve the next day.

Look what they are doing with 3D printing now. No need to seek out balsa for this model. This model was created using this printer. I found it retailing in Australia for around $1250. Tip: Click on the 2 arrows near the bottom RH corner to watch in full screen.
