President Report – Aug 2013

22nd August, 2013

What are the hottest topics of the month?  No doubt they are the forthcoming elections and the extremely wet weather of late.  I think that most of us have had enough of both.  To date Launceston has received 215 mm whilst Swansea would be lucky to have had 30 mm. I would heartily welcome some of that rain here so I don’t have to irrigate my fruit trees.  When I last visited the field about ten days ago most of the car park and immediate area around the club house were ankle deep in water and definitely gumboot territory.  However, the area from the tables to the far side of the strip was quite usable with just a few puddles on the western side.  Since my visit there have been more downpours so the site would have further deteriorated.

With existing conditions I can’t see us flying for quite some time.  Hopefully, George will keep us informed when things change.  Whilst there is the usual lull in flying this time of the year some of our members may have started or completed some new projects.  If this has been the case we would love to hear about them and would welcome photos for George to add to our website.  How about a photo of the new Luton Minor, Greg? Maybe Kevin has a photo or two to share???

Some time ago I was thinking how great it would be to have a Club Weather Cam facing our soon to be erected wind sock.  It would be so useful for us who have considerable distances to travel to the field only to find when we arrived that conditions were too windy to fly.  I know several clubs have this set up and maybe we could keep this as a future project on our wish list.

We are all familiar with the success of the recent auctions George has conducted on our website.  One item that wasn’t put forward is a model that Rob Dale also donated which could be useful as a club trainer.  I am willing to donate servos and accessories for this model but we also need a good, reliable 40 size motor (electric or nitro???)We shall discuss this power option at our next committee meeting but in the meantime will welcome donations or either or both.  Please contact one of the committee members if you can assist.

Despite the inclement weather,  some projects have been completed or are nearing completion.  These include the building of a new Tx compound table, a charging bench inside the machinery shed and erection of fence posts around the club house.  I must thank Geoff, Terry, Mike H and Bill for giving generously of their time/skill to do this.

Not so good news has been the illnesses of two of our members.  Geoff Hay has undergone surgery recently and will need some ongoing treatment.  I have visited and kept in regular contact with Merv Cameron who is seriously unwell.  Of great concern is that present treatment has not offered any relief so far.  On behalf of the club I wish Geoff and Merv a speedy recovery.  Our thoughts are with you.

Many thanks to those who replied to my request to change our Annual Dinner date.  No one has been adversely affected so our new date will be Friday, 4th October.  I look forward to sharing this evening with you and your partners.  Let’s make this a night to remember.

We shall soon have another committee meeting so, if you have an item you would like us to discuss/address, please contact one of the committee members in the next few days. We welcome both input and feedback.

“til next time,

Safe Flying,  (Even if the weather dictates that it’s in the lounge room or on the simulator)

FRED WILLIS
