Hangar Talk – July 4 2015

Club Day – July 2015

A brisk day today but enjoyed especially because of our friends from RFAM paying us a visit.

The boys from Hobart brought up a kit of a “Gangster 52” and organised a raffle give-away. Geoff Hays was the winner. Geoff generously offered it up for a redraw and this was won by Mike Hope.

Kevin dusted off his big Yak for the day. A couple of minor issues with fuel due to the long time in storage but Kev had it up and running in no time. Tony S from RFAM brought along his big IMAC Extra and he and Kevin shared some thoughts during the day.

The highlight of the day being Gavin Hallam and his jet a “Boomerang Torus”. Gavin flew it in very windy conditions but he flew it with a great deal of authority. The wind had him wondering whether the model was out of trim or whether it was the wind. Using about half laps, the model didn’t need any of the runway on takeoff or landing. Gavin said the model is designed to be a STOL sport model. He has a timer on his radio of 9 minutes which allows him enough time for a couple of go-arounds if necessary.

Here a few details about the model.

  • Wingspan 90″
  • Length 92″
  • Channels 8-12
  • Turbine JetCat P140 turbine
  • Thrust 32lbs at 125,000 RPM
  • Radio Futaba TMZ-18
  • Fuel Tank 4L
  • Fuel Consumption 0.5l/min at full throttle.
  • Flight Time 8-10min
  • Weight 18kgs+/-
